Bernard Shapero @bernardshapero of @shaperorarebooks presents an extraordinary 17th-century album of Ottoman watercolours, a rare example of early export art from the Turkish empire.
Containing 160 hand-painted works, this remarkable album captures a wide-ranging visual record of Ottoman life and culture. Only one other comparable album is known to exist—in the Library of Congress, featuring 120 works in a closely related style.
A treasure of both historical and artistic significance, the album was one of the highlights on view at the fair, offered by one of London’s leading dealers in rare books, manuscripts and prints, based on New Bond Street.

Michael Goedhuis of @michaelgoedhuisgallery presents a remarkable pair of mythological Buddhist elephant censers.
Dating to 1736, during Japan’s Edo period, these finely cast bronze works are as rich in historical context as they are in craftsmanship. The beautiful patination is matched by inscriptions in calligraphy, naming not only the maker but also the temple donors who originally commissioned them. These rare details offer an astounding level of insight into their origin.
Originally temple offerings, these censers also served as incense burners and possibly as flower vessels in the intervening years. Having surfaced in Paris in the late 20th century, they remained in a French collection until recently, and now stand as exceptional examples of devotional Japanese bronze art.
